Shared SSL Certificate
Posted by on 09 December 2010 03:33 PM

Edit: Effective 8/28/2015 Arvixe is no longer offering free shared SSL certificates. Please contact support with any questions you may have.

All Linux hosting plans come with a shared SSL certificate.  Shared SSL is not available on Windows hosting plans.

This means you can use our SSL certificate to secure (encrypt) a page on your website.

Usage Example:

Assume your server is cobra.arvixe.com and your cPanel username is USERNAME.

Your main domain's site files reside in /home/USERNAME/public_html on the server.  Normally, you'd type in http://domain.com in your browser address bar to see your website.  Or, as mentioned in your Arvixe welcome email, you can see your site by going to http://cobra.arvixe.com/~USERNAME/ too.

To use the shared SSL certificate, you would just use https instead:
https://cobra.arvixe.com/~USERNAME/

https://highlighter.mysitehosted.com/~USERNAME/

and so on...

You can access specific files and folders this way by adding the paths:

https://cobra.arvixe.com/~USERNAME/contactus.php

https://cobra.arvixe.com/~USERNAME/addon_domain.com/index.php

You will need to replace the above with your actual server and cPanel username.

Anyone knows how to set up shared SSL with magento?

If there is a possibility, you'd have to look inside the magento config to see if you can completely change the URL to a different URL when needing to use SSL (for login/orders).

Does shared SSL mean I do not need to buy a cert for PmWiki at all?

Thanks

Shared SSL is not a replacement for real SSL certificates. Its generally only used to secure an image that's being hosted on a secure page. This is ebcause with a shared ssl, your URL changes completely and it will not work with most apps such as PmWiki if you do want to secure it with a SSL certificate.

In the above example -

https://cobra.arvixe.com/~user/contactus.php would be https://cobra.arvixe.com/~dan/contactus.php if your username was dan and your contactus.php was located inside public_html/ . However if its not working, contact staff. Some older servers don't have shared SSL by default.

Webmail can be accessed securely on our servers from https://server.arvixe.com:2096/ example https://cat.arvixe.com:2096/ (simply replace server with the name of your server you are on, found in your welcome email or you can contact our support department for the information)

When I use https://server.arvixe.com/~user/ to access a file in my cgi-bin, the file does not execute, but the code is displayed. Other files work. Is there something that I need to set to allow cgi to execute with the shared SSL? If not, can I disable that behavior so that the code is not exposed?

It sounds like you may have an issue with your .htaccess file that is causing the files to not run. Contact our support team and we will be happy to take a look at that for you.

I'm working with multisite in drupal, I wonder if you can enable shared SSL, or if I need to buy a SSL.

So long as you are on one of our linux plans you can access out shared SSL by using the following syntax :

https://servername.arvixe.com/~username

Just make sure you replace server name with the name of our server, and username with your actual cpanel username.

If you need to see an exact example, feel free to open a support ticket and we will provide one for you.

The syntax should just be :

https://coney.arvixe.com/~user/domain.com

replace user with your cpanel login/username and it will work for you. If you need more help with this feel free to create a support ticket and we can provide the exact URL for you.

I've just migrated a OpenCart site to Arvixe and I was wondering if I need to change anything to enable SSL certificate on the site or this is something that will automatically work?
Michael Carr

Yes, we will need to install the SSL certificate for you again, so you will need to send the certificate and its key files to ssl [at] arvixe.com

Yes, prestashop will run fine on our Personal Class plan, which can also use shared SSL, but for a web store you will look more professional to use your own SSL which is also supported by the plan.

I was reading here http://yoast.com/wordpress-ssl-setup/ about how to set up a secure connection over SSL to WordPress admin area. Is the shared certificate enough for this?
Michael Carr
30 September 2013 08:31 AM
Yes, Shared SSL will give a warning message, but you can save or accept the certificate and that will go away. Shared SSL offers the exact same encryption level as provided by non shared SSL certificates. They are simply not issued by a third party which is only an problem when running an e-commerce site.

I turned SSL (shared) on and entered the address you supplied. Checkout pages function normally with product images, but our logo image (located in an Abante image folder) disappeared and I've been unable to configure a url to it. Is there a way to get an image into protected pages from outside them or would there be a particular folder Abante will be able to identify in which I would put images that would be accessible from protected pages?

It usually is possible. Please open a support ticket and we can take a look for you.

So what would be the shared SSL URL for a subdomain - example - http://beef.hotdog.com/wp/products.php
Michael Carr
16 January 2014 11:10 AM
The URL is dependent on the username of your account and the server the account is located on. from the domain name itself it is not possible to determine.

These instructions do not seem to work for my owncloud server. What does appear to work is:

https://arandur.owncloud.arvixe.com/~user/

or

https://domain.com/~user/

where one must accept the certificate from arandur.owncloud.arvixe.com.

Is this correct?

It appears we have a non-signed SSL installed at https://arandur.owncloud.arvixe.com./. Please reach out to our support department so we can get this corrected.
