Addon Domain

If you want to start a second or third website, an addon domain is needed. An Addon Domain is added to your existing control panel and points to a subdirectory within your hosting account with us. This means you don't need to sign up online nor pay extra to start a new site.

You do need to register each additional domain before you can use it. New domains can be registered at https://www.arvixe.com/domains.php

If you do not want to register a new domain, consider creating a Subdomain instead of an Addon domain.

*NOTE: As with pointed or parked domains, you will first need to register the domain and change the nameservers of the domain to our nameservers. If you do not do this first, you may not be able to proceed with the final setup via your control panel.

Setting Up Addon Domains

cPanel

After logging into your control panel, go to Domains > Addon Domains, after which you will see these options.

New Domain Name: Enter your domain you wish to add here.

Username/directory/subdomain Name: When you click outside the New Domain Name field, this will be filled out for you. You can leave it this way, but if a name you already used is suggested, you will need to change it.

Document Root path: When you click outside the New Domain Name field, this will be filled out for you. You can leave it this way, but if a path you already used is suggested, you will need to change it.

Password: Enter the password you wish to use for this domain.

Now click the Add Domain button to finish.

WSP

Login to your control panel and go to Domains > Add Domain. Choose Domain for unique domain names, or Subdomain for subnames of your existing domain names. Enter your domain name in the field at top and see the either Create Website or Point to Existing Website. You will also need to Enable DNS in most cases. Then click the Add Domain button.

When would one want to use an Add-on domain? What is the difference between adding a domain and adding an add-on domain? What is the value? What is the advantage? Also, what about a sub-domain? - Same questions as above???

RESPONSE: An Addon domain is a way to add extra domains to your hosting account. A subdomain is a domain in the format something.yourdomain.com where yourdomain.com is a domain you have assigned to your hosting account.

I need to point the DNS to register an add-on domain but I can't find the nameservers to point it to???

RESPONSE: The nameservers are listed inside your billing login at http://billing.arvixe.com under each account by clicking on the Hosting Accounts section. You can also always contact support to obtain your nameservers or the initial setup email.

subdomains don't show up in the view at http://billing.arvixe.com .
So where do you find the DNS name to put into remote registrars of subdomains hosted here?

Subdomains are pointed at A records rather than name servers. The IP address that your website points to can be retrieved on our cPanel offerings by simply logging into the cPanel and looking on the left hand column for your IP address of your account, or our welcome email we sent you when you signed up.

Actual domains are pointed at name servers, and those name servers can be retrieved via the welcome email we sent you upon signup as well.

After i have setup addon domain. At the domain addon list, the document root has pointed to my site root folder (public_html/amx), do i still need to set the REDIRECT TO action?

Not unless you are looking at redirecting that domain to somewhere else.

So if I go to my domainname account with Enom or whoever and point my second domain to the Arvixe nameservers I will then be able to go into the Arvixe control panel and set that domain to be an alias that will resolve to my currently hosted account? Can I point it to a sub-directory or sub-domain of my current account? Thanks.
Arvand Sabetian

Ok, does the original answer need updating? When I look at the control panel I see "Add Domain" which becomes "Add New Domain" with three options:
1. Domain 2. Sub-domain 3. Domain Alias. What is the difference between these and where is this explained? Thanks. (And there is also "Create Website 1 of 6" -- how is that different?)

Under addon domains, you simply need to supply the domain name and have the system generate a random password. None of the other information is really required and generally meant for more advanced users or those who wish to use a separate FTP Account to go to the root folder of the addon domain. For a domain alias, you can either use the parked domain feature (which will show the main domain's website when the parked domain is visited) or add the domain as an addon domain, then go back to the addon domain section and setup redirection to the domain of choice.

I know I'm a bit late to this discussion, but when I try to create an add-on domain I'm asked to fill in a "Subdomain/FTP Username:". What does that do and why does it need this? I created one add-on domain and now I have, apart from the newly created add-on domain, also a subdomain of my main domain. I don't need that. Why do you create it?
Michael Carr
12 March 2014 10:16 AM
The subdomain is created for internal functions of the control panel, it also allows you to preview the hosting space without using the actual domain name. The FTP user is for granting file access to the new add-on domain itself without giving out full account access. You do not have to use either if you do not want to.

I have gone through the Add-on Domain steps and have redirected it to my main blog site. However, when I check on my domains registered with Arvixe it only lists my first domain, with no mention of my second. Do I have to register it in some other way? I am allowed 6 domains.
Arvand Sabetian
06 January 2011 08:57 PM
Please note that we offer hosting for 6 domains not the registration of the domains as well. You will need to register the domains at http://www.arvixe.com/domains.php and make sure to choose the option to point them to your hosting account.

I have a reseller account... I have several accounts I want to selectively move to Arvixe from a different hosting company. Each have a distinct URL and should also have a distinct FTP account. I have redirect my first attempt but everything seems to be under my current directory and is something like [email protected] I hate asking dumb questions and this seems like the dumbest but how do I do this?
Arvand Sabetian

You would need to create each account under your WHM instead of adding each domain under your cPanel. Then, login under the specific cPanel for the domain you just added to manage it.

Hi,
I seem to have both a sub-doamin and an add-on domain for the same site which, I think is effecting redirects. Is it possible to remove the sub-domain without destroying the add-on doamin structure?

Thanks
Arvand Sabetian
12 January 2011 06:26 AM
That fact would not affect redirects as they are simply aliases. If you are having issues with redirects, its generally because of conflicting .htaccess files (which is all cPanel uses to setup redirects). If you need assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Does adding an Addon domain mean that you own the domain name?
Arvand Sabetian

It will not give you the domain. It means that your hosting account can now host that domain. You will still need to own the domain and point to the hosting account using dns servers.

Both of the links above
1. Hosting Plan vs. Domain vs. Website
2. Point/Park a Domain
are broken (7-3-2011). I tried them with FF, IE, and Chrome. What is the procedure for pointing a domain with DotnetPanel?
Arvand Sabetian
05 July 2011 10:06 AM
Thank you for the update. The links have been updated. However, they are in regards to our linux/cPanel hosting. For DotNetPanel, you simply need to add the domain under Domains and create a website for it if you want it to have its own site or add it as an alias under a current website if you want it to point to a current website.

My original site with Arvixe - www.yettoberead.com - was made using Dolphin 7. I've decided to move another site I work with over to Arvixe as well, but would like to try to work with Elgg.

Is it possible to set up an Addon Domain for the site I'm moving and install Elgg to just that directory and keep Dolphin 7 for the main directory/site? Or is there another way you suggest?

I've enjoyed working with your system and look forward to your feedback. Thank you.
Arvand Sabetian

Yes you can definitely do that. Simply add the addon domain and then use Softaculous to install Elgg into it.

Can an add-on domain have its own favicon.ico file? I tried putting it in the add-on domainname.com root directory and flushed the browser cache but the image did not appear in my browser.
Ryan C

Yes it can.

Simply ensure the favicon is placed in the addon domain document root. It may take a few hours for it to show up. Please try checking from a different browser, etc. If it still doesn't work, please double check the coding that you rae using to load your favicon.

Successfully created addon domain, it all works great.
I don't understand what the subdomain user is for.
I thought it was maybe to access the subdir for my the addon through (s)ftp @ sftp://myaddondomain.com, but nope I get an access denied.
Can you explain what this user was created for?

Thanks
Ryan C
18 October 2011 06:47 AM
The user created at the time of addon domain creation is in fact used for FTPing to only that specific website. If you login to cPanel and click on FTP accounts, you will find the username as it is supposed to be type as well as reset the password if need be (access denied means the username or password is incorrect)

Once you add the domain to your account, you can access the control panel using the same syntax as usual but you will need to login using your main control panel user name and password. Creating an add-on domain does not also create a unique control panel login, but you can setup unique FTP logins and grant them to only have access to that add-on's web root. To create accounts that have their own control panels, you would need a reseller plan.

In order to set the add-on domain as the primary domain on the account, the add-on domain will first have to be removed from the account. You do not have to delete the files or databases associated with that add-on, but its DNS records and email accounts will be removed. After that you can setup the domain as the primary, but you will have to recreate email accounts and upload or move your web files. So it is possible to do, but there is not a simple one click method of accomplishing that. some manual moving and configuration of your add-on data will be required.

I currently have a website hosted on a VPS account. I want to add a new website with it's own domain, it's own MySQL database, and it's own files, on the same VPS but separate from the existing site that I have now. Should I use the add-on domain to add the new site?

I tried adding the new site using domain addon and it added the new site as a subdirectory to my existing site. I would prefer that it would have it's own public_html directory instead of being a subdirectory. Would this be possible?
Michael Carr

Since you are on a VPS you can create a new account for the new domain instead of adding it as an addon domain under another account. Then the new domain will have its own isolated file structure. If you need help on doing that, feel free to contact support.

I am trying to use 301 redirects on my addon subdomain URLs so that my addon domains are optimized and simply look like "addon.com". I have had no trouble doing this in the past and on other hosts by simply using the redirect tool in cPanel. However, I can't get it to work right with my new domains (all purchased through Arvixe).

- My addon domain does work at this URL: main.com/addon.com
- I used the redirect tool to redirect that URL to: addon.com ...but I get a 404 error and the URL indicates: http://www.addon.com/home/username/public_html/addon.com/"http://www.addon.com"
- My addon domain does not even work at this URL: addon.main.com
- I have the proper redirect in place. I have compared my work to the same redirects I've created with other sites on other hosts, and everything looks to be the same.
- I have erased the .htaccess files in both main domain and addon domain, and tried again with different methods, then erased and started again, then again...

< Question 1: >
Can I host two different domains that are already registered by a 'Personalclass Hosting' account?

< Question 2: >
If possible, I have to change the DNS setting for the 2nd domain.
When I open an account, Arvixe gave me a 'Domain DNS information' to change the setting. So I already changed the DNS setting for the first domain.

Do I have to use the SAME DNS information for the 2nd domain, too?
For example,
Domain Name Server 1: ns39.arvixe.com
Domain Name Server 2: ns39.arvixe.com

I have a new domain registered with, and site hosted with, your company.
I also have an existing domain registered elsewhere, currently just used for my emails.
I wish to use my old domain name to access the new site.
I also wish to use those existing domain email addresses, but operated through my new Arvixe-hosted site.
How can I achieve this?
Also, the existing provider requires your IPSTAG in order to transfer that domain to Arvixe, how can I obtain that?

Before you transfer your domain, login to your hosting account and setup the domain as well as the email addresses that you have setup with the old provider. Then once your transfer completes these email accounts will already be setup and ready to go. Our IPS TAG is ENOM

I changed the name servers and added an add-on domain hosted at godaddy. Now my add-on domain resolves to my main account domain name.
addon-domain.com - to - main-account-domain.com

I want it to resolve to the sub-directory I specified in the add-on domain form with the addon domain name in address bar.
addondomain.com - to - addondomain.com (root/directory)

Is there something I'm missing?
Michael Carr

An add-on domain will resolve to the maindomain.com/add-on/ directory by default, its sounds like you also have some redirect setup that is pointing the add-on domain back to the primary domain. Check the .htaccess file in the maindomain.com/add-on/ directory.

It is not possible to remove the sub-domain, that is needed for the control panel to function. You could create rules in the .htaccess file to block or redirect access to www.main.com/addon.com.

how can add a new domain and enable domain mail to this domain
Michael Carr
20 November 2013 10:44 AM
It depends on if you are on Linux or Windows. For Linux you will want to add the domain as an addon domain, then you will be able to create email accounts for it under the mail menu. On windows you will click on domains from the main page and the setup the new domain. After that you can also go back to the mail page and create email accounts. For either of these to work though the domain will have to be point to the server.

This can be done, but you would have to write some code to access the server and setup the sub domains. There is no way to have the control panel automatically do it for you

I would like to know if there is a difference between domain and add on domain from the point of SEO and all that relates to promoting an affiliate websites ?

Thats a question best directed to an SEO expert, however if there were to be a difference I would expect it to be minimal

I have bought a new domain "marketing810.com from you guys and used add domain to add it. I does show in the panel, but when accessed from the web it gets a 500 server error. I have changed the INDEX page, took from a working site but the same continues.
Michael Carr

500 errors are generic messages that encompass a large array of problems often related to permission or configuration issues. Checking the error log on the control panel is a good first step to find the exact error that is being produced.

I want to add a domain to one of my already existing subdomains on my Arvixe server. The Addon Domain form returned: "A DNS entry for the domain, “subdomain.site.com”, already exists." Do I need to add the domain to a new subdomain?
Michael Carr
18 April 2014 09:20 AM
Yes, the DNS entry can only have one record in the DNS server, so you will have to remove any existing records before being able to create another one. I would remove the sub domain, and then setup the add on domain to use the same web root.

Hello a question about the domain limitation of 4$/month Linux plan. It said Websites (Domains) 6.
Can i still for example add as many subdomains of the following domains after adding 1.com 2.com 3.com 4.com 5.com 6.com as addon domains? thx
Michael Carr
22 July 2014 12:13 PM
You can create as many sub domain DNS entries that you would like however if the plan only allows 6 domains or websites, you can only host six actual sites on the account.

Hi I just created a new subdomain: how can I install Wordpress in order to have a different site from the root domain? TNX!!!
Michael Carr

If you use the auto-installer, you would simply need to specify the same directory where the new sub-domain is loading from.

I am confused somehow because I have redirected the domain(weightlossconner.com) I purchased from Godaddy with and I set the nameserver to
ns1.echidna.arvixe.com
ns2.echidna.arvixe.com
I have checked with Godaddy and I found that it was changed.I have also added it from the Addon Domain at my cpanel I tried checking it with my browser yet it only point to how one can get to my registrar.
Please let me know how to get this issue resolved as soon as possible.

Name server changes do not have an instant effect. Once updated the new records take several hours to propagate through the internet. It sounds like you just need to give your changes more time to take effect.

I have just bought your "Personal class ASP" service. I have two sites hosted here in NZ with different domains that I want to move to Arvixe. Both domains are currently hosted elsewhere.
1. To get email set up for both domains do i have to transfer the domains to you or can I just point them to your name servers?

2. When adding domains to my site can i create separate FTP accounts for them. I dont care if i use the same control panel for both sites.

3. I want to be able to transfer the sites before I point the domains to your servers. Where do I find the ip address for my hosting to do this.

1. You can simply point the domains to our name severs found in your welcome email called "Hosting account information"

2. You can create your own FTP accounts from the control panel and only assign them access to certain directories/websites.

3. This would be found in your hosting account information email that you received upon signup

I am adding an addon domain, but it will not let me proceed without filling in the Subdomain/FTP username box. What needs to be entered here?
Ryan C

When filling out the addon domain page, you should be able to tab down and the sub domain part should automatically populate. I also recommend taking a look at http://blog.arvixe.com/how-to-add-addon-domains-to-your-website-using-cpanel/

I have a new add-on domain but i can't create an ftp account with [email protected] Is that possible?
Ryan C

When adding the initial addon domain, it gives you the ability to create an FTP account then.

I just joined and am not clear on the addon domain. Do I create a new domain and add it on with arvixe, and where in arvixe can I create the new domain, or can I take an existing domain I have parked with another hosting service, have it point to this ip address and then go through the process of making it an addon here?
Thanks

The domain must first be registered with us or someone else. Than simply login to the cPanel and click addon domain and add it as an addon domain (Linux/Personal/Business hosting). Once done, point it to the name servers for the server found in the welcome email, or point the website's A record at the current DNS registrar (wherever the DNS is being hosted at) to our servers IP address (which you can also get from the welcome email). Please contact our support team if you have any questions. We would be happy to help.

Hi,

I just opened a personal class hosting account today and registered a main domain.

I want to host the 4 other domains (registered with godaddy) and hosted with dreamhost here.
Will I first need to register these domains at arxvie? Since I am registered already, there is no value add to do this for me.

Is there an alternative approach?
Ryan C
06 July 2015 10:04 PM
If a domain has been registered already, it does not need to be re-registered again with Arvixe to make use of it. Instead where ever the domain is currently registered, the domain needs to be pointed to our name servers (found in your welcome email). Once that has been completed, ensure it is setup in our control panel as a domain (cPanel > Add-on Domain on our Linux hosting plans) and then you can upload your website and start making use of your hosting with the respective domain you added.

Hi. I would like to set up a site www.mysite.eu and a mobile one m.mysite.eu The mobile one will have the same page name but different content. If the main site has the page, www.mysite.eu/folder1/mypage.htm, where will be the page m.mysite.eu/folder1/ mypage.htm ? Another directory (in the main site) ? hope its clear.. Thanks
Ryan C

Hello,

You can define where ever you want the m.mysite.eu directory to be served using our control panel. You could even have it as, on our Linux hosting, /public_html/m/, etc. there are various ways it could be done.

I've added my domain to Addon Domains successfully, but it redirects to my existing domain automatically without any Redirects rule, I want it goes to its own site/folder, how can I do ?
Ryan C
14 July 2015 11:08 PM
If you added the add-on domain without any redirection rules but a redirect is still occurring, its possible a rewrite is being inherited from the root .htaccess so I'd start there and renaming the file, clear the browser cache, and see if the redirect continues.

I have an addon domain on my main account on server rhea however when trying to redirect the domain name using

ns1.rhea.arvixe.com and ns2.rhea.arvixe.com I am getting an 'invalid name' in the nameserver control panel??

Those are name servers that you have provided. Where ever you are updating the DNS for your domain, it should not be referring to it as a "redirection", rather a "name server". If the domain is registered with us please contact our support so we can assist you. Else you would want your current domain registrar to guide you to the proper section of updating your name servers.

Getting ready for Drupal, new territory for me. Is it possible to purchase personal from you, place a coming soon placeholder and use a subdomain for learning territory? Or what would be the best route for a beginner?
Ryan C

This would definitely be possible with our Personal Class hosting plans. You can put up a place holder page on your main domain, create a sub domain following the below guide, and then create a Drupal install using the following guide:

http://blog.arvixe.com/how-to-add-sub-domains-to-your-website-using-cpanel/

I have an Arvixe personal plan with one domain registered and working well.
I have another registered name and site hosted elsewhere. That site had a forwarder from IWantMYName to the other web host. The forwarder is canceled, however I understand it will take some time for the web crawlers to drop that forwarding.
I would like to make this name an Addon Domain and begin working on it. Can I do that before the name resolves to Arvixe?
Ryan C
12 August 2015 03:07 PM
Yes this is completely possible to add as an addon domain without it yet being pointed to our name servers. You can follow this guide to complete this request:

http://blog.arvixe.com/how-to-add-addon-domains-to-your-website-using-cpanel/

You will not see any of the changes such as files uploaded to the domains directory until the name servers have been pointed and propagated to our servers.

I am trying to do an Add On Domain that is already pointed to your name servers. In fact I am getting email from that domain. However, every time I try to do an ADD On I get the error message "You are not allowed to add more than 0 addon domains. The domain was not setup."
