Hosting Plan vs. Domain vs. Website
Posted by - NA - on 23 September 2009 05:38 AM

When you visit your website, you appear to experience a seemless experience of loading the website into the browser. In reality, there are 3 distinctly different aspects of your website that can all be interchangeable:

Read on to better understand the critical roles each of these parts play in delivering your website to your website's visitors.

Domain Name

The domain name is the address that your visitors enter in their browser, such as This tells the browser which web hosting server to search for your files on in order to load your website. Domain names have to be purchased from a registrar and pointed to your web hosting server in order to serve your content.

In the PersonalClass Hosting Plan, we allow 6 websites/domain for every hosting account you own. This limit is specifically for how many domains you may use with your hosting plan, the domain registration is not included.

Once pointed to your server, you can create subdomains for your domain, such as or You can create an unlimited number of subdomains for a domain you own that is pointed to our servers.

You may update any domain you own to point to any server you choose and are able to control, displaying different websites as you desire.

Hosting Plan

A Hosting Plan is the subscription for space on a web server, which remains online to deliver your content even when you are not available. It is possible to run a server on your local computer, however it would only be available as long as your computer is online and does not experience network errors.

In addition to high availability and uptime, a web Hosting Plan includes storage space to place the files that visitors will see when they load a domain that is pointed to your server.

You may change the files hosted on your Hosting Plan in order to display different websites (the files on the server), or you may point different domains to your server to display the website you have stored there on different domains.

A website is a collection of files and possibly databases that are viewed by users who visit a domain which is pointed to your hosting plan. Depending on how a website is configured and what it's requirements are, a website may be hosted on most any server you choose (Hosting Plan), or be loaded by any domain you point to it.

Can you please be more specific? By 6 websites, do you mean,,, etc. each are completely separate, with their own root folders, or do site2, site3, etc. just redirect to,, etc. This has been a point that has bitten me before with host providers, and it would be nice if hosts were a little more clear about this. Thank you.

RESPONSE: Each will have a separate site. While the files will be located inside the root of the main domain, from a web server stand point, these are completely separate websites and a visitor of will not be able to see that it is hosted on a hosting account with or .

i have Personal Class Asp pro hosting plane , as accourding to my host plane i have a unlimited domains,
which means i can regiester unlimited domain like ( , etc) as many as i want absoultly free right?
if i leave you hosting acccount , what about my domains? i have to pay it or it will terminate.

RESPONSE: Unfortunately that's not correct. You can host unlimited domains but not register unlimited domains. Offering unlimited registrations is unfortunately not possible as every company will have to pay for every single domain registration. However, if you do pay for the domains, you can keep them even after you cancel your hosting account.

@Alex - I'm not sure the response to your question is right. I have an add on domian to my website but it shows as on a web browser. Unless there is another way to add a domain to the hosting but I can't find it anywhere...

If you simply add your domain under the addon domains and change the nameservers, putting your files under public_html/site2 will mean that when someone types in, they will see the files under public_html/site2. No one will ever see . I suggest contacting support if you continue to run into problems.

01 January 2011 03:12 PM doesn't appear to be registered. You'll need to make sure to register the domain and point it to the nameservers of your hosting account's server prior to it working. Adding it as an addon or parked domain will not register the domain for you as well. You can register domains at .

Hello, I intend to acquire the PersonalClass plan wich permits 6 domains.
My doubts are:
1) Can I host my brazillian domains: and In the same account?
2) What I need to do in my registered domains, only set de dns servers to the arvixe dns servers?

Thanks in advance.

1) Yes you can. You simply need to point them to the nameservers we give you.
2) Yes as mentioned above.

The Personal Class ASP plan has a "Free Domain Name 4 Life". If I decide to stop using the domain that I initially register "4 Life," can the "4 Life" status be applied to a new domain?

I am on Personal Class ASP which has a limit of 6 web sites. To be brutal honest I felt cheated when I came to know about its reality. You have given me freedom of having unlimited domains but in order to install any application (say wordpress) on each of these subdomains I need to make it a site else it won't work! So I can only have 5 sub-domains (plus my main domain which is a site too) in other words. Please correct me if my understanding is wrong.
Arvand Sabetian
20 March 2011 01:15 PM
While not a 100% true, for most users, it is true. There is a possibility to use some special web.config variables as well as virtual directories to not have to create a website for each application on a subdomain. Quite honestly, even with the limitation (say there was no work around), it is hands out the best deal on the internet for .NET hosting.

Arvand, i agree arvixe is a hands out the best deal on the internet for .NET hosting. it's beyond awesome. cheers

I'm considering the possibility of upgrading from PersonalClass to PersonalClass Pro. Is it possible on the fly, by paying the difference - pro rata tempore? Could you, please, give me some pointers on how to do that? Thanks in advance!
Ryan C
19 October 2011 07:41 AM
When upgrading from personal class to personal class pro, it is very simple

1) Get in contact with our sales department either via ticket, phone, or live chat. Request to be upgraded to Personal Class Pro

2) You will pay the difference from your personal class plan to the personal class pro plan

3) We upgrade the account to personal class pro with unlimited domains. It literally takes seconds to complete the entire process.
16 September 2011 10:18 AM
So do I understand correctly that If I sign up for the Personal Class or Personal Class Pro package, I cannot host applications (Like Word Press or Joomla) on each domain under one account?
So I can't do this?, and have WordPress, and, and have Joomla?

Q: I hear that you do give 1 free domain?
A: Yes, 1 free domain for each hosting plan for as long as you host with Arvixe. Should you choose to leave, you can pay for the domain and take it from Arvixe.

How much would that cost (to pay Arvixe for my domain back)? Would it matter how many years I've had it for free?

Michael Carr
12 May 2012 06:28 PM
The number of years you have had the domain would not cause a difference, to retain the domain a fee of $9.95 would be required.

I have account with you but domain names are registered at other company. I want to move that also with arvixe account. What I need to do to make that happen. Also I added domain pointer few minutes ago . It did not ask for any additional payment. Will new domain name become available when DNS records across internet update or I need to purchase that separately ?
(I assume it's free since I have less than 6 sites/domains/pointers )
Michael Carr
26 March 2012 06:14 PM
The simplest way to point your domains to our hosting will be to alter the name servers under those domains. By default they will be the same name servers that are set on your primary domain. if your unsure of those you contact our support and we will be happy to supply the proper name servers for you to use. When you add a domain pointer, you are setting up the hosting side of that domains configuration for it to work with your hosting account. You will also need to register these domains as well, which can be done right on our home page.

i have my account under I have an existing website I'm moving to Arvixe called As i understand it, I just need to set up an account called under the AddOn button. Is that right? My web person says they've done this before and I'm supposed to put it in the Parked Domain section not the AddOn.

And how do I connect the Wordpress file that I've created on my website to the domain I add in either AddOn or Parked (whichever is the right one?)
Michael Carr
27 September 2012 10:55 AM
An addon domain will create an unique space and host entirely separate content than your main domain. A parked domain will simply load the same content as your main domain. If you create a parked domain for the new domain, no extra script configuration will be needed. If you setup an add-on, you will have to install wordpress into that new folder.

Michael Carr

No, once the domain is transferred, we can mark it as your free domain and it will always renew for free.

In plan Personal Class Asp I can host up to 6 domains.
Could you present structure of them?
Will be it like root -> domain1 forlder, root-> domain2 folder.... -> domain6 folder?
Or it's like domain1 folder -> domain2 folder, domain1 folder -> domain3 folder...?
In other words whether addon domains are just virtual folders?

08 January 2013 08:16 AM
I am confused about virtual domains and subdomains for my Personal plan hosting, and I am having some issues along the way.

My goal is to run two nopcommerce shopping carts in subdomains, like this...

I set up a virtual domain on the domain with the path: \\wwwroot
Did I need to do this? Logically it seems that any further virtual directories I create will be like a subdirectory 'within' the main domain structure. Sort of like a virtual domain within a virtual domain.

I created a subdomain shoppingcart1 with the path: \\wwwroot
I then created a virtual directory with the same path: \\wwwroot
At some point during setting this up my main website name was changed from to to (how, I don't know).
This caused my site to be visible at, but page not found errors for A support ticket resolved getting it changed back (thanks Jerry).
I am hesitant to try and create a second subdomain/virtual directory in fear of botching it all up again. Is the order important for success, meaning always create the subdomain before the virtual directory or something?

Thanks, John

to accomplish what you are after I would create two websites on the control panel, one for each sub-domain, then the data would not be nested inside of one another and you could control the settings on each uniquely.

I currently host 5 websites somewhere else that I am considering moving to Arvixe. One of those websites is pointed to by multiple domain names, so in the end, I have 5 websites and 10 domain names. Does this fit into the limit of 6? I'm not sure if the limit applies to the unique website hosting instance or the domain names.
Michael Carr
26 February 2013 10:16 AM
Hi Kevin, the methods of doing that vary between linux and windows, but yes think of the domain limit as hosted domain environmental, you may have six of those but can also setup additional domains to redirect to those sites as parked domains, and then host as many of those that you would like.
05 March 2013 11:29 PM
I want to utilize the free domain name that comes with my hosting by registering it. However i have another domain i want to transfer to my new host with your company will i pay for the second one i.e. domain i'm transfering?
Michael Carr
06 March 2013 10:05 AM
Yes you can transfer in the second domains so long its a TLD that we support, cost can vary depending on the TLD. Keep in mind that the completed transfer will also add an extra year onto the domain names registration.

I'm looking to move hosters. One competitor allows for unlimited domains/sites via URL rewriting. Am I understanding your method is different? Is it the more standard IIS host header method pointing a unique directory? Thank you.
Michael Carr
30 May 2013 10:02 AM
We support both URL rewriting and virtual directories, so you can do both on either the unlimited Pro plan or the standard plan.

I have a domain with the Personal Class Plan . I have added a Dedicated IP address to my plan. If I purchase and add another domain, will the new domain go on my dedicated ip address or to the shared servers?
Michael Carr
16 July 2013 01:18 PM
The new domain will go to the shared servers IP. On linux plans only the main domain on the account can be set to use a dedicated IP.

Hi. I bought a hosting plan along with the usual free domain. The transaction wasn't approved. I searched for another option and the payment worked, so I got another hosting plan, with another company, with the free domain registered to my name. Next morning I was requested to pay Arvixe for the hosting plan + domain I had asked for. I paid. So I have my server space, and got from support a mail saying that after 60 days I can transfer my domain here from the other company. But I already have a site working there, using my free domain. Why should I bring it here? But now what happens? I have my space here and would expect to use the domains I have the right to use. So, can I use another domain as my primary domain here? Thanks!
Michael Carr
17 September 2013 12:05 PM
You can host any domain wherever you would like regardless of where it is registered by setting its name servers. An actual domain transfer is not required. It is ICANN policy that domains must be at least 60 days old before being transferred, so that rule applies to all domains no matter where they are registered.

When hosting 3 domains with these names:

will the directory structure be like this:

or will they be completely separated like this:

Michael Carr
18 September 2013 09:59 AM
This depends on the plan that you have. On Linux, the web root is /public_html/ each addon domain will be a sub directory under that, such as /public_html/addon/. On windows, the structure is / for each website that you create.

I currently have a hosting plan with Arvixe. The domain is registered elsewhere. I am using a subdomain as the host for an Elgg installation.

Right now: = blank webpage on Arvixe = Elgg app on Arvixe

I want to point to a SquareSpace account, but I want the subdomain to continue to resolve to the Elgg app hosted here, like this: = webpage on SquareSpace = Elgg app on Arvixe

What DNS record settings would make that happen?

You would need to update the A records for the domain and sub domain through the provider who is controlling your name server records.

I'm just wondering if there is any major differences of have one main domain with a few addon domains in the same root folder, with having each domain separately and not as addon domains. Addon domains are quite convenient as you can deal with them all under one main folder.

I will move 6 sites to Arvixe and just wanted to hear your thoughts on this matter.

Thank you for you kind assistance.
Michael Carr
20 November 2013 10:54 AM
It depends on the plan type. cPanel based linux accounts can not have the domain structure altered at all. Windows accounts can though but it is just a matter of personal preference. I like to have everything under one main web root so I can have master FTP access and such for accessing every part of the account.

Apologies as I’m sure this has been covered, but I’m unsuccessful in getting it to work:

Right now: = blank webpage on Arvixe (provided free when signing up) = personal Linux box is registered with NameCheap

In CPanel, I used “Addon Domains” for & has document root of home/public_html/

I have moved all files & sql from personal Linux box to Arvixe, via FTP, to home/public_html/ and all is fine when I go to URL:

However, I do not want to resolve with the, but rather just
I modified my NameCheap Host Name records, both @ & www, using A (Address) to the Shared IP Information/address given in initial setup email from Arvixe for, but this does not bring up the intended (it brings up

I would like to keep my NameCheap account and host on Arvixe…from my understanding, with the Personal Class I can host up to 6 domains.

What am I missing to accomplish this?
Michael Carr
20 November 2013 10:39 AM
Yes,, it will work as desired, you simply need to setup an A record to point to the servers IP address, the same IP that is using.

Me and a couple of friends of mine can not afford to buy a hosting plan individually so we thought we could split the cost of the Personal Class Hosting Plan since we only need one or two domains a piece. Hi, I am thinking to register to the Personal Class
I am a bit confused with the domain thing.

1) I am planning to have two separate websites: and
I want to have 5 domains pointed to, each with different names and different TLD, mainly .com or .ca.
Am I under the alloted 6 domains?

2) If i buy a dedicated IP and the 6scan, will they be attached to both websites or only one of them?

3) Same question as above regarding the Stats tools. Can I get specific satitistics infos separately for each of my sites ?

4) Are the email spam-virus protections effective on all the emails in the account ?

5) Do you offer a site lock security? and if so, will it be attached to one site only or both ?

Thanks for you time and prompt reply

1) I am planning to have two separate websites: and
I want to have 5 domains pointed to, each with different names and different TLD, mainly .com or .ca.
Am I under the alloted 6 domains?

Those would be considered alias's or parked domains all going to one website. You can setup as many parked domains as you would like.

2) If i buy a dedicated IP and the 6scan, will they be attached to both websites or only one of them?

The IP would only be applied to the main domain on the account. 6Scan license are based per domain.

3) Same question as above regarding the Stats tools. Can I get specific satitistics infos separately for each of my sites ?
Each site will have its own statistics

4) Are the email spam-virus protections effective on all the emails in the account ?
All inbound emails are checked for viruses

5) Do you offer a site lock security? and if so, will it be attached to one site only or both ?
We do not have a partnership with site lock.

I'm considering getting an account with Arvixe and have a couple of questions:

1) I'm a little confused about the way the domains work. Let's say I want to have three sites each with its own domain. E.g., I would have, and I understand that the domain for site1 would be free, domains 2 and 3 would have to be purchased. I've seen some responses to questions that imply that domains 2 and 3 can be purchased from you and registered by you and other responses that domains 2 and 3 would have to be purchased elsewhere and only hosted by you. Can you clear this up for me?

2) Autoresponders: I get the impression that your autoresponders only send a response to a received email. It's a typical practice in Internet Marketing to have lists of customers interested in different things and to set up your autoresponder to automatically send emails(for a newsletter, say) to a list at predetermined intervals. Autorepsonders such as TrafficWave, Aweber, etc. provide this functionality but it appears from what I've read that your autoresponders do not or cannot do this so one would have to have an account with an autoresponder company to get this functionality. Am I correct on this?

Ryan C
26 January 2015 08:35 PM
1) Domain 1 would be yes with the purchase of any hosting service with us, yes. Domain 2 and 3 can be purchased with us depending on the TLD. TO see TLD's, we can register, please see the following link:

2) At this time, our built in auto responder software does not give this time of feature, but you are free to install any sort of auto responder software that you would like to use.

I thought hosting another domain would be separate and no one could tell I'm hosting it on Domain1. But this means if anyone knows the path, they can access it within Domain1.

Hello Char,

To achieve the "separation" you are going for, you would need a separate account. Add-on domains give you the ability to host multiple domains under a single account. It may be possible to come up with a deny from PATH rule for the addon domains an place it in your root .htaccess

Each add-on domain must be purchased either through us or another provider (registered). Once registered, you can add it as an add-on domain, and then ensure its pointed to our name servers and start making use of it.

while trying for you Personal class hosting, I accepted the first free domain option which is supposed to be free for life. However, I saw a "Private Domain" marked under the Domain name field which has a price tag of $9.9. What is that for?

Domains have to be accessible to have your personal information identifiable (such as name, address, etc). Services such as can be used to gather this information for your domain. Domain privacy allows us to serve as the "contact" for your domain issues so that if someone needs/wants to contact you, they can mail things to our physical address, or to our email and we forward it on to you keeping your information secure.
